Title: 'Shifting Narratives with Type Hierarchy'
A workshop by Prof. Tarun Deep Girdher
Principal Faculty, Graphic Design, NID Ahmedabad, India
Abstract:
This (beginner level) workshop will introduce the participants to developing text-based narratives through visual emphasis and typographic hierarchy. Compositions with a specific narrative will be created using only text (no images) exploring typographic hierarchy using the basic principles of visual design such as visual contrast, font size, alignment, spacing, weight, orientation etc.
In the second part of the workshop, participants will take their compositions as reference and recreate a different composition with a new narrative. All work will be done without any dependency on software or computers. At the end of the workshop, all participants will have atleast two compositions with shifting narratives, but the same text.
Materials/ tools to be brought by student participants:
Scissors / metal scale and paper cutters – one each participant
Glue stick (small) – one for each participant
Materials provided by Typoday:
A4 sheets (white 70-80 gsm) – 3 to 5 sheets per participant
A whiteboard & whiteboard markers OR blackboard & chalk.
A4/A3 size printouts (these files I shall make and send, prints, based on the number of participants- can be taken before the workshop – approximately two each participant – this will be the text which the participants will cut and paste to make compositions.)
