'Reviving Old Lettering/Calligraphic/Epigraphic Styles as Fonts'

Abstract:  This workshop will introduce the audience to the process of font design. Specifically, we will cover the revival method for designing fonts. This technique uses historic styles found in lettering, inscriptions, and manuscripts as a basis to design fonts. There will presentations which describe various revival methods. Participants will be provided with historical styles which they will attempt to revive as fonts. The facilitators will also introduce the basics of letterform construction and sketching letterforms for these styles. Participants will then develop visual grammar for their own font based on inputs from the facilitators. Participants are advised to bring a 2B pencils, eraser, sharpener and ruler. They can also carry markers, brush pens, calligraphy pens, colours etc. Thisworkshop is designed for students from a wide range of backgrounds.

Materials/ tools to be brought by student participants:

For drawing/calligraphy: 20 A3/A4 sheets of white drawing paper, 10 A4 sheets of tracing paper, 2B pencil, eraser, 30 cm scale, boru, black fountain ink, small container (to pour ink in) To cut boru: Cutter and scissor To write/stick on whiteboard/soft board: Whiteboard, whiteboard marker, masking tapes, and board-pins. For projection: LCD projector and screen
